To complete your formation as a guitarist, at 22 you went to study to Los Angeles. Do you believe that it is necessary?
"It depends on the type of music you play. When I was 20 years old, I ussually listened to jazz, fusion, music whose origins were in EEUU. In my first trip to New York I went to see around clubs, meeting musicians, it pleased me a great deal, and as soon as I could, I went back to L. A. to study. I recommend it because there is all kind of music, there you can find jazz, classical, blues, ..., everything, and the feeling is that vanguard is being cooked there. And about recording the CDs, there is an economic reason, there are hundreds of recording studios and you can find very good prices. Moreover, I acquaintanced with many people when I was studying in LA, and my favourite musicians were living there".
And about music, are we so behind in Spain?
"The world of music in Spain has radically changed over the last ten years, especially in how to train someboby as a musician. When I began there was nothing, we only had some music magazines to learn, now there is a lot of information. But about the opportunities that you have as a no-commercial musician, we still depend on abroad. In that case it is even more difficult".
About your latest ,CD "The Sacred Nature of Life", which are the differences between this and the previous one?
"There are mainly two differences, the shape and the content. About the content, the first CD had all my experiences until that moment, and there were a great deal of guitar sound, the first one had a group concept, the protagonism was distributed among all the musicians, composition was very important, and it was very close to the American way. This last one is innermost, more European, more accustic, with a trio formation. They are both very different works, although they have my language of music in common , playing there I am evolutioning but remaining faithful to myself".
Tell me about the musicians who have been recording on this CD.
"Well, about Patitucci, a friend of mine contacted with him and sent him a tape, he liked it and we came to an agreement; it was just a professional relationship. Alex Acuña only played for fun, we met when I was recording my first CD, and Richard Bona was one of the biggest surprises, I met him when he was playing bass in a club with Joe Zawinul, and in my opinion he is one of the best bass players I have ever heard. We talk for a while and we recorded a couple of themes in the studio. Living in a city like L.A., you meet people day by day, famous or unknown, but many times, those ones play better than the famous ones. For a great deal of people is the city of opportunities, is like the myth of the movies, with the music is the same. Many things happens to you every day".
